The Best Native Trees to Plant in the West Island

Planting a tree is one of the most rewarding investments you can make for your property. But choosing the right species is critical — a tree that thrives naturally in the West Island climate will need less maintenance, resist local pests, and provide decades of beauty and shade. Here are our top picks for native trees that do exceptionally well in the Montreal region.

Sugar Maple (Acer saccharum)

The sugar maple is the quintessential Quebec tree — it appears on our flag for good reason. It thrives in USDA Zone 4, tolerates the clay and loam soils found across Beaconsfield and Pointe-Claire, and provides spectacular fall colour in shades of orange, red, and gold. Sugar maples grow to 20-25 metres and can live for over 200 years. They prefer well-drained soil and partial to full sun. Plant them with plenty of room — they develop a wide, spreading crown.

Red Oak (Quercus rubra)

Red oaks are fast-growing hardwoods that do extremely well in the West Island. They tolerate a range of soil conditions and are more resistant to urban stress than many other oak species. Mature red oaks are stunning specimen trees, reaching 20-30 metres with a broad rounded crown. They are common along older streets in Kirkland and Dorval. Their deep root systems make them excellent windbreak trees for larger properties in Hudson and Saint-Lazare.

Eastern White Cedar (Thuja occidentalis)

For year-round privacy and greenery, the eastern white cedar is hard to beat. It is the most popular hedging tree in Quebec and grows naturally in many areas of the West Island. White cedars tolerate pruning well, resist most pests, and stay green through even the harshest winters. They thrive in moist, well-drained soil and can handle partial shade. Plant them 60-90 cm apart for a dense privacy hedge.

White Birch (Betula papyrifera)

The white birch, with its distinctive peeling bark, adds year-round visual interest to any property. It is a fast grower that does well in the sandy and gravelly soils found in parts of Île-Bizard and Sainte-Anne-de-Bellevue. White birches prefer full sun and moist soil. They work beautifully as accent trees planted in groups of three. Note that they are susceptible to bronze birch borer, so keep them healthy with adequate watering during dry summers.

Bur Oak (Quercus macrocarpa)

For homeowners with large properties, the bur oak is a magnificent long-lived tree that tolerates drought, poor soil, and road salt better than almost any other native species. It is an excellent choice for front yards in areas with heavy winter salting. Bur oaks grow slowly but can live for 300+ years and reach massive proportions. They are already a presence in many parks across the West Island.
